We meet Vela Ostofvold as an accomplished academic - a forensic librarian. She can tell us more about a book than the writing on the page. Vela draws people in to where the book has been and even perhaps what the splotches on the pages mean. Yet, beneath the facade of success, is a young woman full of self-doubt and insecurity. Vela wants to know who her father is, but also who her mother is. A mother who is often more absent than present. Thus is the delight in reading this multifaceted, complex book of dichotomies: Rural vs cosmopolitan Europe, love vs indifference; truth vs deception, knowing vs not knowing. We meet a host of wonderful characters, William Dean, the Persolinos', Olivia, Penelope, Astrid and Lord Gray to name a few. It is hoped that we will see more of Sari Sikstrom's work in the future and more about Vela, Olivia, their family and friends.

Watermark The truth beneath the surface Sari Sikstrom 9781497398740 Books Reviews

Watermark The Truth Beneath the Surface by Sari Sikstrom is a journey of a young forensic librarian on her quest to find the identity of her father. This tale not only captures this young librarian's journey from the grandeur Rome to the old and very English city, Oxford, but also captures another woman's passage to an exotic country, India.

Thanks to the author, Sari Sikstrom, for sending me over a copy of her book, in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Dr. Vela Ostofvold, daughter of a very famous singer named, Olivia Ostofvold, who embarks upon a quest to search for her father, after her best-friend, Amelia tells her that she is the reason behind her father's absence. When Vela was fourteen and left alone by her careless mother, Olivia, she went to a book-store to find the largest and the oldest dictionary, where she meets Amelia, who happen to be the book-store owner's daughter. Eventually their bond grows into friendship and soon they become each other's guide in their lives. Vela falls in love with Amelia's cousin, Franco. But after Amelia's comment, Vela looks for the clues of her father's identity among her mother's closet in their rented flat in Rome, where she stumbles upon her grandmother's friend, Penelope's letters, where she has narrated her journey to India where she fell in love with an Indian Sikh man and got awestruck by the colors and the cultures of India. But eventually, Vela distances herself from her lover as well from herself on her quest to find her father. Will Vela be successful to identify the watermark in her life? Will she find her father?

Sari Sikstrom has penned this story with strikeness and passion since it is quite evident while I was reading the book, the whole story was unfolding right in front of my eyes like a movie. Moreover her description about India is quiet brilliant and very vivid. I loved her characters from the protagonist Vela to Amelia to Miss Arthur to Franco, although Olivia was not present in the story but the mentions about her made me think that she is almost present among the other characters. The pace of the book is quiet good and from one country to another, the author has led us into Vela's enchanting journey with a myriad of various cross-country cultures and landscapes. Set among so many timelines of Vela's life, the story not only captivates you but will also intrigue you with its underlying mystery. I wish I could see more of Franco and Vela's broken relationship to mend. Although there was very little chemistry mentioned between them, still I could feel their passion when they talked to each other.

Do read this book to find the watermark in Vela's life that Olivia, her mother tried to hide it so well!
Read Watermark in two days. Found it imaginative and exotic. Loved the blend of Italy and India.

The idea of a Book Detective appealed to me; following a trail of inscriptions, dog ears, and the chipped spines of leather-bounds.

Vela's search for her absent father touched me; her questions about who he might be, and who she might be if she finds him.

My favourite element of the book was the writing. Lovely, unexpected and musical words!

Watermark is a mysterious, lively and elegant book.
What a lovely book. We meet Vela doing a book signing for her book about being a forensic librarian. A young girl approaches her and asks about the value of a small book she inherited. Vela gives her some facts about the book and how it was handled, and let's the young lady know it could give her some clues to her ancestors. Something Vela herself is looking into. Then she travels to Italy. Letters found while packing up Olivia's, Vela's mother's, apartment make India sound so exotic and romantic, while still letting you know there can still be pollution and sadness in such a wonderfully exotic place populated by millions of people. Her description of the saris they wore to dinner made me want one. Then Vela's travels to England, to examine books in a collection to estimate its value, and to talk about possibly taking possession of it on the owner's death. Woven through the entire story is Vela's search for her father's identity. So well written, I want to read other works by M. Sikstrom, and believe I will be reading this book again. I fully recommend it to everyone.
The characters come alive in this wonderful written first novel about an intrepid forensic librarian ( think book detective ) in a search for her father and herself. And I'm not just saying that because Sari is my cousin. I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery filled with
Dan Brown-like locations and plot twists.
Watermark is a delightly written investigative adventure & journey both inward & out...
Vela Ostofvold is a young woman who touches many people's lives and in doing so creates a story populated by unique characters, interesting locations and multiple plot lines which converge to a satisfying ending. Great dialogue and the "India" letters stand out. An excellent summer read!
A lovely novel without pretense, I really enjoyed this story from cover to cover. I find myself jumping between books on my sometimes, but I stayed with this one right through to the end.

Give it a read! I even ordered the paperback version as well, it's a nice book to have on the shelf, especially given that the main character is a librarian! I'm sure Vela would approve -)
