I was one of the poor suckers who lined to buy the Death of Superman when it hit the shops back in 1993. I even got the deluxe version with the black armband.

Looking at it almost 20 years later, it's amazing how poor it is.

The story, such as it is, is a monster climbs out of a hole, kills Superman and dies.

The story behind the story is more interesting. The Superman writing team had a plan for 1993, they were going to have Superman marry his long-suffering girlfriend Lois Lane coinciding with a wedding in the TV show Lois and Clark. But then the TV series pushed their plan back a year or two leaving the comic without a plan. So someone in the writer's conference said 'let's just kill him'.

So they did.

The monster, Doomsday, has no personality, a dull design and no powers other than being big and strong. He punches his way through one of the lesser versions of the Justice League, punches Supergirl into silly putty(she gets better) and finally punches Superman to death.

The nadir is the final chapter with the battle between Superman and Doomsday. Artist Dan Jurgens unwisely chose to tell the entire story in splash pages. Walter Simonson has done this before (twice now), for a particularly epic battle but, well, Jurgens is no Simonson. The panels are awkwardly laid out; Superman holds a conversation with Lois Lane standing 3 feet away while fighting Doomsday.

It's a shame that DC really did not bring its A game to such a major storyline.

Check it out if your curious but really there's nothing to recommend this story.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I read the comic books about Superman's battle with Doomsday and later editions about the new Supermen. this book was great because it was able to go into more detail than the comic books giving us more of the story. I've also read a couple other Superman books including THE LAST DAYS OF KRYPTON and ENEMIES AND ALLIES. I would like to see more books about Superman and Batman. I would also like to see some books about Supergirl (including her origion)and her life as it was in earlier comic books (not a part of Lex Luthor's life.) Even some stories about the Justice League would be nice too. If they're not written yet maybe we can get the authors to write some.
This story was obviously a must-buy since it was used as source material in Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice. It met most if not all of my expectations for how a Superman story that explores the idea that the so-called God of the DC Universe can be killed and I'm sure that a lot of people would cry after reading the last 5-6 pages of the book because you'd think it's impossible for Superman to die but he can. Even if you're not a big Superman fan I recommend you check it out!
An incredible & ground-breaking story line that, combined with the other TPBS "World Without A Superman" & "The Return Of Superman" presents an incredibly gripping story that takes time to spotlight many of the more minor & lessor known characters in Metropolis.
"lost" my original copy. Was over glad to find this to replace it. Now it hangs on the wall of the man cave.
As far as the story, this is where comic books all ended for me, Superman was killed. All the silly fluff since is...well, silly fluff. I have a sleeve of the images from this compilation. When asked about it I tell folks it's to remind me that even the greatest among us can be destroyed by greed.
This story is the major highlight of my youth. It made a huge impact on my life. Finding out that Superman can die is like finding out that santa is your parents. Anyways, Nowadays you see every superhero franchise do a story about their characters death. But this one started it. If you are a fan of comic books, graphic novels, and superheroes in general, then you don't want to miss this book.
One of my favorite graphic novels and it never gets old. It brings me back to my younger days. If you have not read this title then I feel sorry for you.
Great read. It came in great quality and I read it all in one sitting. Obviously there is parts that come after it that you can order as well. I read this yo prepare a bit for "Batman V Superman" along with "The Dark Knight Returns". They are both classics.
