Joy Castro's latest crime thriller, NEARER HOME, is the second in the Nola Céspedes series. This time the protagonist, a 28-year-old Latina reporter at the Times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans, is the first person to come across the body of a murdered journalism professor on a local jogging path. The search for the professor's murderer takes her from homes in the Lower Ninth Ward to the spacious horse ranch of a U.S. Senator, and what she unearths leads her into personal dangers she doesn't expect. Readers will re-discover some of the familiar friends who people Nola's life but will also be challenged to examine some political issues not focused on in the first novel. As always I was absorbed in Castro's work from the first page, and as a writer I appreciated and learned from her talent for detail and poetic yet piercing prose. Castro also seems to have tightened the structure of her novels since her debut thriller; this second effort moves at a quicker pace with fewer narrative tangents. I read every book Joy Castro writes, and I'm never disappointed.

Fascinating study of current newspaper work, Cuban life in the States, effects of rape, life without a father and more. Great character developments.
The second in a new crime series set in post-Katrina New Orleans, this book is gripping from the very first. It continues from the first novel "Hell or High Water" and develops the characters further. Fun read by a Nebraska author.
Joy Castro's novels are excellent.Full of suspense and the good knowledge of New Orleans and the personal views of her heroine make the books very interesting, especially when you know the town a little and love it.I wish all her books would be translated into German and that she would write another one.
Looking forward to more by the same author.
Even better than the first one (Hell or High Water)! Nearer Home continues the complex story of strong, independent, intelligent Latina firecracker Nola Céspedes, a journalist navigating the dangerous side of post-Katrina New Orleans. This writer does not water her stories down in stereotyped, 6th-grade vocabulary. Expect a smart read. If you don't know what "subaltern" means, look it up, and then revel in the fact that the main character has a voice. A powerful voice.
I was initially captivated with the story about Nola finding a woman's body in the park while jogging, her boyfriend issues and move to Soline's condo. I loved her investigation methods and relationship with friends but it did slow down a bit with too much focus on her personally before getting back to more work at investigating. It didn't really hold interest...just sort of in and out but the story did become more interesting about 3/4 through. It's a good book, just not a page turner.
I enjoyed the first book in this series and I was disappointed with this one. In crime fiction today there are two mjor elements o the story, one dealing with the crime piece, the other with the relationship thing. Today you can't pick up a crime fiction novel without finding a number to pages devoted to how things are doing at home. Is the cat going to die? Will Bob chase Mary (romantically, not as in stalking, nor murder). This book overdoes the "R" thing Nola with lover Bento, with ex-roomie Uri who is gay but maybe breaking up with bf Dr. Whomever, with the single mom of 3 trying to date again, with her three best buds one of whom is pregnant, another who suspects her husband of cheating, with her little Sister, with her Mom, with the the Senator's aide - remember this a crime fiction story..... What's left of this 275 page book is a murder involving a former pro of Nola's , the prof's student lover, and a shady U.S. Senator. All of which come together a bit too quickly, conveniently and unconvincingly. And c'mon, a hidden tape recorder? I thought that disppeared from crime fiction 20 years ago. I liked the NO background in book one, in this one it just seemed to be scenery. Doubt that I'll read #3.
